Assam Jatiya Bidyalay

Learning without the burden of learning in an unfamiliar language—a principle globally recognized as fundamental to meaningful education—lies at the heart of Assam Jatiya Bidyalay.

Founded on January 1, 1994, Assam Jatiya Bidyalay emerged from a conviction that education should nurture curiosity, creativity, and a child’s relationship with the world, rather than reduce learning to rote memorization. Its founders sought to reimagine education in Assam by creating a learning environment in which children could encounter knowledge first through their mother tongue, while gradually developing the linguistic and intellectual skills needed to engage with the wider world.

Today, Assam Jatiya Bidyalay is recognized as a premier institution for primary and secondary education in Assam. Its educational philosophy places children at the center of the learning process, introducing them to the richness of nature, culture, society, and the world around them through experimental, experiential, and activity-based methods. Rather than treating knowledge as something to be memorized, the school seeks to make learning an active process of discovery.

A distinctive feature of the school is its step-by-step bilingual approach to education. Children begin their learning journey in a language that is familiar and accessible to them and, as they progress through the higher classes, gradually develop proficiency in both Assamese and English. In this way, the school seeks to preserve the formative importance of the mother tongue while equipping students with the linguistic confidence to participate in a wider national and global world.

The founding of Assam Jatiya Bidyalay also gave rise to a broader educational renaissance in Assam. Inspired by its philosophy and academic model, more than a thousand schools bearing the name “Jatiya Bidyalay” have since been established across the state, drawing upon the educational system pioneered by Assam Jatiya Bidyalay.

What began in 1994 as an effort to rethink the possibilities of education has thus grown into a wider educational movement—one grounded in the belief that quality education begins with the child’s own language, experience, culture, and curiosity, and opens from there onto the wider world.
